Todd Robel was one of more than 2,000 NIU students who received a college diploma in May. This milestone is even more significant in light of the fact that that Todd is the first in his family to achieve this distinction. Although he graduated with a history major, Todd plans to become a full-time firefighter/paramedic. He is working part-time now for two fire departments. In addition, he wants to follow his passion for history and research. "I want to interview World War II veterans and make their stories available for future generations," Todd explains.
Todd might not be where he is today if not for the generous support of NIU donors. As the recipient of the Chief Richard Gunther Firefighter Endowed Scholarship, Todd experienced firsthand how the scholarship helped to ease some of his financial burdens. "I have been balancing at least two jobs since I was seven years old trying to save as much as possible for my college tuition," Todd remarks.
The new grad says he is not looking forward to facing the possibility of years of debt but he was determined to go to college and get a degree. "My experiences at NIU, including being a trip leader for Recreation Services' Outdoor Adventures, have bolstered my leadership skills and strengthened my overall psyche in countless ways," Todd says. "I will forever hold NIU dear to me." In the future, Todd would like to help others achieve similar opportunities. But until then, to NIU donors and supporters, he says, "Thank you, thank you a million times over!"
