Like many transfer students at NIU, Mario Cortes Sandoval’s first year has been full of surprises. He was thrilled that his professors were of such a high caliber and so down-to-earth. He was amazed at the ease with which he made friends.
But none of these surprises could compare to what this talented accountancy major calls his most “magnificent surprise,” which was receiving the Bill and Dian Taylor Accountancy Award, a scholarship that is paying his tuition and fees for his junior and senior years at NIU. Mario says he’s most grateful that the support allows him to focus more on his studies and less on how he will pay for them.
He was the valedictorian of his high school class, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, received a McCormick Scholarship, and is an Illinois State Scholar.
In his thank you letter to the Taylors, Mario expressed his appreciation. “I am thrilled to know that you have chosen to believe in me and support my education because your scholarship makes it possible for me to continue to attend NIU,” he wrote.
Mario earned his associate degree from Illinois Valley Community College and plans to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at NIU. Eventually, he plans to sit for the CPA exam in preparation for a career in public accounting.
"On behalf of all the students that you have helped, I would like to thank you for your generosity and devotion to all of us," he wrote.
Scholarships make an education a real possibility for students in need. If you would like to learn more about supporting NIU students like Mario, please contact Judy M. Schneider at 815-753-1389 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
