Alexis Marckess ’16
Alexis Marckess is unstoppable when it comes to helping others. Her goal is to build her career in the nonprofit world, and she's off to a great start. Like many college students these days, she knows how difficult it can be to finance a college education.
Her academic and volunteer contributions as an NIU student are seemingly endless. She has done volunteer work at charities on and off campus including the NIU Campus Childcare Center, Hope Haven Homeless Shelter, PAWS Chicago, Feed 'em Soup, and the DeKalb Public Library. Currently, she has her sights set on volunteering for City Year, an organization that helps students in high-poverty communities succeed in school.
In addition to her studies, she works part time at Chipotle Mexican Grill to help pay the bills. She says the Margaret Louise Wood Scholarship donated by Dr. Clarence Hardgrove has been both an honor and a relief.
As busy as she has been, Alexis has always made time to excel in her studies. The communications and media studies major has made the dean's list every semester that she's been at NIU. She is also a member of the Lambda Sigma National Honor Society and the Community Leadership and Civic Engagement Student Association.
Following graduation, she plans to earn a master's degree to help fuel her career as a public relations professional in a nonprofit organization.
