Jaclyn Fowler received a scholarship made possible by an endowment Clarence Hardgrove created through her estate.
The late Clarence Hardgrove never had the opportunity to meet NIU math education major Jaclyn Fowler, but that didn't stop Clarence from making sure Jaclyn and other students like her were prepared for bold futures as math educators.
Clarence taught in the Department of Mathematics from 1950 until her retirement in 1977. This spring, Jaclyn received a scholarship made possible by an endowment Clarence created through her estate in 2009.
Jaclyn says she wishes she had gotten the opportunity to meet Clarence.
"I would like to thank her and ask her what she enjoyed most," Jaclyn says.
Clarence's generosity helped Jaclyn continue the path that began with help from her high school teachers.
"I had phenomenal high school math teachers who inspired me to use my talent of understanding math and teaching children," she says.
This summer, Jaclyn will travel to Nicaragua to help build a school and teach children English. In her free time, she enjoys singing with Northern Notes, a female NIU a capella group.
Jaclyn says the scholarship has alleviated the stress of paying for school and allowed her to focus on her studies. She adds that it has helped boost her confidence as well.
"It means someone believes in me, my education, and my future," she says. "And that honestly is one of the greatest gifts I could ever ask for."
