Shaylene Hoover, accountancy major, will graduate next year with the help of the Sally Webber Memorial Scholarship.
Accountancy major Shaylene Hoover comes from a long line of proud Huskies. She is the fourth in her family to attend NIU.
With the help of the Sally Webber Memorial Scholarship, Shaylene will graduate next year and hopes to earn her CPA and begin working for a public accounting firm. (Sally Webber was a tenured professor in the Department of Accountancy when she died in 2005.)
"This scholarship really lightened the burden on me and my family," Shaylene says. "It allowed me to concentrate on my studies instead of having to work full time."
An Amazing Experience
Shaylene says she feels blessed to not only receive the scholarship but to have the amazing experience she is having in the College of Business.
"My friends who go to other schools are impressed with how NIU is mentoring me. The university has provided me networking experiences such as Meet the Firm Night, Career Night, and Meet the Intern Night," she says. "Every professor has an open door and you can talk to them any time. I love it!"
The 21-year-old is making the most of opportunities presented to her at NIU. She is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, an accountancy organization that has provided her with additional knowledge and insight regarding the accountancy profession. Through BAP she has had the opportunity to listen and learn about real-world experiences from a variety of speakers. In addition, she volunteers for Light the Night, an annual walk to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and for Hope Haven, a DeKalb area shelter that helps families in need.
Inspiration to Pay It Forward
"It really has meant a lot to me to know someone cares and has invested in my education," Shaylene says. She says that receiving the scholarship inspires her to one day give back to NIU.
